In Ghana, Parliament has established a 20-member Poverty Reduction Committee in the current legislature. The APRN has worked closely with this special committee since its launch in 2003.
The community monitoring pilot project organized in Ghana looked at the effect of the government’s girl-child education policies in the north of the country. The pilot project discovered that the Capitation Grant, a policy implemented by the government to make primary education affordable for all, has increased the levels of enrolment in primary school. However, some parents feel that it is still too expensive to send their children to school, even with the Capitation Grant. A specific recommendation of their pilot project report is therefore that there should be a distinct effort at promoting girl-child education by specifically allocating resources in the budget and promoting a policy to support girl-child education. The pilot project report also recommends including the monitoring process into PRSPs in the future, where a dialogue between community members and service providers should be promoted.
